Before modeling came into play John Gurtshaw actually started with acting in theater throughout high school. It wasn't until he met Kristin Rigsby, while she was choreographing “Company”, that he was in at the time that he decided to even look into modeling. She mentioned to him that she modeled and that it would be a good to look into as far as another avenue to pursue. “I feel I have come a long way for only doing this a year now and a lot of credit goes to Kris and her guidance she has provided throughout. I don’t think I would be where I am currently if it wasn’t for her love and support”, he states.
John has a vast history in the entertainment field.
He went to Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, MD and received his Associates Degree in Liberal Studies. Originally the focus or concentration of his study was vocal performance. He has being singing since he was in pre-school and once he went to college he tried going the professional route. John decided it wasn't for him and his professors were pushing him toward the opera route. John transferred to Frostburg State University and received his Bachelor's Degree in Theater with a concentration in Acting and a minor in Business. John has been acting now for about 12 years and just recently in the two years started doing film and getting use to being in front of the camera as opposed to being on stage. He has had the privilege of working closely for those 2 years with local writer in the area, Tracey McKoy. John completed several sit-com pilots with Tracey, two of which are on IMDB; Government and Edge of Insanity. Government won an award as well as Brand New Day in the Las Vegas Film Festival this past July. Tracey also has written a web a series called Georgian Way that he stars in along with his co-star Daniel Thorp. The web series is about his character, Steven, a mild-mannered accountant, whose sedate life is constantly being turned upside down by his freeloading older brother, Skippy (Daniel), and their neurotic neighbors. The best way to describe this comedy would be to think of the TV show Big Bang Theory meets Seinfeld or Modern Family meets The Office. Georgian Way has gone international and is currently being watched in India, Belgium, Brazil, Guam, United Kingdom and Egypt. Season 1 wrapped up in August. Kristin also had a chance to be part of this project with me. She played John’s college love interest in Episode 9. To watch the videos you can visit www.georgianway.com.
John stated that it would be great to do more print work as far as modeling goes. Lately in the last few months it has been more runway shows due the fashion weeks that have been occurring. He not only got to be part of Baltimore Fashion Week, but also Latin Fashion Week in NY and DC.
Aside from being told that he has the body type and all for the industry he would say that he is pretty comfortable when it comes to being in front of the camera. “In acting it’s about selling yourself as a person, but in modeling it's being able to sell the idea or concept to the target audience and I feel that is something I could do, who knows, maybe my acting will help me in that aspect.”
“Needless to say I have my mom's genes and most people hate me for it I guess. Doesn't matter what I eat, the weight doesn't really go up, but doesn't go down either. I'm not limited on what I eat, but I do watch what I eat and try to live a healthy life style.” John does work out at the gym during the week or try to at least when his schedule is not crazy. After modeling the last year, he has discovered where he seems to fit most when it comes to his actual body type. He knows he has the height when it comes to industry standards, but because of his slim build he mostly likely would do well in the European Market.
John is currently represented by an agent with L and M Modeling and Talent which handles both Baltimore and New York. He also recently just signed with TV Vincent Management which also handles talent in the Baltimore area as well. “The way I see one's portfolio getting better is constantly have opportunities to shoot with various photographers, while keeping in mind its quality over quantity, but also having variety”, he said.
John currently works full time during the day for the government. Usually he is only available for modeling gigs and other projects in the evening and on weekends, but depending on what the project is, he is pretty flexible.
“If the right kind of offer comes on the table that I know is going to benefit all parties than I would take it. My coworkers and I joke all the time, that if I had a contract offer and it was promising that I would leave my job no questions asked, because my passion lies in the acting/film/modeling industry”, he mentions.
Current projects at the moment consist of the show that he has been rehearsing since August. John is performing in RENT for the second time in the area. First time he played as Roger at Carroll Community College, this time he is performing the role of Benny with Silhouette Stages in Columbia, MD. The director for this wonderful production is Sue Kramer. “It has definitely been a heck of a journey with her as well as the rest of the cast. They are a very talented group to be working with and I only encourage people to come out and see the show.” The show opened October 25, but runs through Nov. 4th So if you want to see it, you want to get your tickets before the show sells out. There aren’t too many projects for the remainder of the year for John with holidays approaching, so his schedule is pretty free. He will be at the DMV awards November 10th as a greeter as well as possibly being a part of the men’s skin care line for SYLK Cosmetics in Owings, Mills. Next year will be just as busy for John when he goes out to audition for “The Music Man” in his local area, which should run sometime in March. He also will start filming for Season 2 of Georgian Way sometime in February and start submissions for MD and NY fashion weeks.

Much like her other half, Kristin Rigsby also comes from a similar theater background before modeling came into play. Kristin has been involved in theater for fifteen years. Five of those years she spent working at Timonium Dinner Theater. Though she has acting experience in a variety of shows she has done, it was working at Timonium Dinner Theater where she grew even more so on the production side of things. She not only has stage managed and directed, but also made her choreography debut there. Shows she was a part of included Grease, Godspell, Jesus Christ Superstar, Company, and Meet Me In St. Louis
to name a few.
Kristin caught the modeling bug about two years ago when a friend invited her to a photo shoot. When she saw the final result she was hooked. She started searching for photographers throughout the region to build her portfolio, so she could gain experience in the industry. She wanted to figure out what genre of modeling was best suited for her. She has definitely had her up's and down's. “Just starting out is hard and you have to learn how to take better care of yourself and have that support structure from family and friends”, she said. She then joined a gym to get in better shape and started eating better.
Kristin and John have known each other now for three years and it wasn’t long after she introduced him to modeling and they found each other to be very compatible. Their chemistry with one another definitely shines when it comes to shooting together.
As far as work goes, Kristin is a Personal Assistant for several business owners in the area, helping them keep up with everyday life from housekeeping to running errands. It gives her a chance to work out her own schedule and be more flexible when it comes to projects during the week for modeling and other events.
Kristin has come a long way in these past two years and her time and work reflect this. She has been in a variety of print work, some of which has been published such as Born to Ride Magazine and The Mariner and is also featured on several fashion boutiques online. She has walked for various fashion shows such as Baltimore Fashion Week, Latin Fashion Week in NY and DC, and others. She and John also share the same agent with L and M Modeling and Talent Agency as well as TVincent Management LLC. Kristin has been featured in shows on Investigation Discovery such as “Who The Bleep Did I Marry?” “Deadly Affairs” and “Stolen Voices Buried Secrets”. Lately Kristin has been networking and trying to meet different people in the industry, especially make-up artists and hair stylists. “My one goal as far modeling goes is to someday be in a major cosmetic ad.”
Though it has been busy for this talented couple this past year, this is the time of season where things start to slow down with the holidays, so her schedule is starting to open up a bit more. Kristin will be attending the DMV awards this month as an award presenter as well as being a part of the women’s skin care line for SYLK Cosmetics. As far as future projects go, she says she does plan on choreographing “The Music Man” in her area next year and would like to continue to improve her portfolio as well as continue to work with John on more shoots and opportunities together. Kristin will also be sending her submissions out for MD and NY fashion weeks for next years in addition to applying for other agencies in and out of the area.
