FANTA CAMARA
MAY - 2015 - MODEL OF THE MONTH
FANTA CAMARA - NEW YORK CITY
Hi I'm Fanta
My name is Fanta Camara and I am the oldest of five children. My family is originally from
West Africa, Guinea, Conakry, but I was born & raised in Brooklyn, NY. Growing up, I was always considered to be that "awkward looking, skinny, tall, braced-faced, black girl with the "high-water" jeans" on at the back of every line. It was frustrating, embarrassing & annoying, especially since I used to get bullied EVERY SINGLE DAY. My parents didn't know & my teachers never really paid attention. "African booty scratcher," "the girl from Recess," "Daddy-Long Leg" & "Stilts" were just a few things I was called amongst many other names. This is what I heard every single day in Elementary School. Little did these kids know that those words would have such a huge impact on my life from that day forward! And of course it did!
I grew up being insecure with my weight, my height, my skin color & the way I looked. I always felt like I was never good enough or pretty enough or short enough or even thick enough! My parents didn't know nor did they understand that me being verbally abused/bullied affected me in so many ways & still affects me today. At home I would get compared to other family members, which made it worse. However, I started to do things that made me feel good about myself, both inside and out. School was my best friend! I made sure that I was involved in almost everything that was offered, from Band to Basketball to Cheerleading to Dancing to Stepping to Theatre to Yoga to Tutoring to Teaching to do Community Service & now Modeling!
I took every negative insult thrown at me & changed it into something positive by doing what I love to do, Rip the Runway! I began modeling in September of 2014. I've had the beautiful opportunities of walking for several International Designers during New York Fashion Week & also walking for several High-Fashion Designers for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. It was such a blessing!
After just a few months of modeling professionally, I was chosen to be the Covergirl of
Fashion Avenue News Magazine in December of 2014. Then again in January of 2015, I was blessed with an 8-page spread of a French Editorial Magazine called Beau Nu. Then again in February, I was featured in Zele Magazine, which captured me Ripping the Runway for my International Designer, Sohung. Words can't even describe how grateful & appreciative I am of such wonderful opportunities.
