Article on photography of Art
The term Art has long been used to classify many of the creative disciplines used to define human existence.
Among these categories is Photography. This article seeks to understand a photographs roll as a creative expression. My credentials are based on over forty years of experience as both a professional and enthusiast searching for a creative voice.
To understand the comparison of photography to Art, I will define what Art is. It is the emotional exploration of our needs, desires, fears and sexual demands of purpose. Art in its most divine form is when the hands of its creator are used as the primary applicator of the materials in transitions, in the creation of its intent, such as a painting or sculpture. This awareness is defined by our physical limitations of understanding. Art is what is human, it is the physical manifestation of our emotions, a purposeful act of human intent, and not a random act circumstance.
How then does Photography conform to this scenario? Photography at its origin is a Narrative representation of an image recorded in its entirety. Void of the physical influences of human interpretation. This unique image recording ability, by a device, substantiates its legitimacy as a deliberate discipline. While this ability does represent a purposeful act of intent in the composing and exposing of the image, it does not go far enough in the fulfillment of there being a physical change to the image. Here the hands of the image maker play the role as a facilitator in the commencement of a process. The resulting image is often considered Art by its very existence; I refer to this as Art by default.
It is clear that a photograph to be considered as a creative representation of Art. A physical change must take place to its originality. This change can be the directing of or posing of, the pre-existing elements found in the original image. However, of greater influence to the image is adding or subtracting of content, either prior to the capture of the image or in post-production. The resulting image is a representation of what Art is, what I like referring to as Re-Cognitive Art.
To define these changes I have devised the following categories below. An image may be represented by more than one category.
The Impressionism Narrative: This is when an image recorded in real time has been altered or distorted in camera or in post-production. Where the appearance of the original image has undergone change but has had no effect on the original content.
The Subjective Narrative: This is where the image captured in real time has undergone a physical change with the redirecting or positioning of pre-existing elements found in the original image.
The Conceptual Narrative: This is where the image recorded in real time has undergone a physical change with the adding or subtracting of content, this is done either prior to the recording of the image or in post-production.
The Conceptual: This is where the recording of the image in real time represents only the first step in a process. Where the adding or subtracting of content is extended beyond the recording of the image to post-production where further changes are made resulting in an image that did not exist in actuality.
